Do you know what are the top 4 causes of dry skin? If you do not know, we are here to help you by providing you a list of the top 4. Read below to get started.

 Winter Weather

Your skin is most commonly dry during the winter months. This dry skin occurs because the humidity level outside drops. The air outside is cold and dry which make the water in your skin evaporate faster. Your skin becomes dry, tight and flaky. Windy weather can also harm your skin by making your skin feel dry and chapped. This is known as winter skin.

You can protect your skin from winter weather by wearing gloves, scarves, and by covering your whole body with clothing. Make sure you use moisturizing lotions that contain the ingredient glycerin. Glycerin helps moisturize your skin. Make sure you moisturize your hands, feet, elbows and knees daily.

 Indoor Heating

During the wintertime, we spend more time indoors and use indoor heating. Indoor heating is dry indoor air. This dry air removes the moisture from your mucous membranes. As a result of this drying out, your lips become chapped, your nose dries out causing nosebleeds, and your throat dries out allowing you to have a sore throat during the cold season.

You can help prevent this from happening by setting your heater to the lowest setting of comfort and you can use a humidifier at night. A humidifier helps hydrate your dry skin, dry throat, and nasal passages.

Long Hot Showers and Baths

When you come in from being out in the cold, taking a long hot shower or bath may not be your best option. Hot and harsh water soaking on your skin will strip your skin of protective oils making your skin extra dry.

When you shower or bathe, use warm water rather than hot water. Your showers and baths should be limited to 10 minutes. This is enough to clean the dirt of your body. Pat yourself dry and do not rub yourself with a towel.

 Use Body Lotion

Do not skip putting on body lotion on your skin. You need it not only during the winter but also during the summer. When you do not keep body lotion on your skin, your skin becomes itchy, flaky and uncomfortable. You should always apply a rich body lotion right after showering or bathing to seal in the moisture to your skin. Apply lotion again right before you go outside and before bed. Lotions with glycerin will hold moisture in your skin and keep your skin hydrated.
